KPMG Consumers & ‘The Creepy Line’

3 Gem worked with KPMG’s Privacy & Cyber Security team to identify best-practice solutions for the use of client data in the financial sector.

3Gem surveyed 7,000 members of the public, across 24 countries, assessing a series of hypothetical scenarios, relating to the use of personal data, to measure which circumstances people felt most comfortable or uneasy with.

The Challenge

Demonstrate Big Data Leadership

KPMG were keen to join the philosophical debate about what ‘Private’ and ‘Public’ really means, in the era of Big Data and in turn, identify best-practice solutions for companies to follow.

Falling short of regulations or misjudging consumer sentiment, could lead to financial loss or a decline in brand trust; they argued that few companies were taking any real initiatives for handling customer data, in moral or ethical ways.

The Methodology

24 Market Study on Public Trust

KPMG’s Privacy & Cyber Security team commissioned 3Gem to conduct a global survey measuring consumers' trust in the online world, and to understand their sensitivities around the use of their own personal data.

3Gem surveyed 7,000 members of the public, across 24 countries. We presented them with a series of hypothetical scenarios, relating to the use of personal data, to measure which circumstances people felt most comfortable or uneasy with.

We also tracked public trust in different named organisations, relating to data privacy and security.

The Outcome

Insight Activation Workshops to Add Value

We delivered the results of this comprehensive study in line with the agreed timeline, providing KPMG with a clear analysis of all key research questions.

We held workshops with multiple global stakeholders when developing the questionnaire and presented the results via a series of discussion workshops, to fully understand findings.

3Gem were praised by KPMG for our guidance and advice throughout the whole process, delivering results quickly and efficiently and for providing valuable input for both the design and analysis of our research.
